Why is Black Friday Black?

Black Friday has come and gone, ushering in the festive rush of the holiday season. We hope you were able to take advantage of all the deals to get your holiday shopping done early. But during all the Black Friday fervor, did you ever stop to wonder why Black Friday is called Black Friday?

The most often-repeated story as to why Black Friday is called Black Friday is that it is the first day of the year that many retailers finally start posting positive revenue numbers. Losses were traditionally recorded in handwritten accounting logs using red ink and positive sales figures recorded in black ink, thus the ‘Black’ in Black Friday is a nod to this custom. However, the original use of ‘Black Friday’ to refer to the day after Thanksgiving actually has a different, though related, history. While “Black” has been applied to many days throughout history to signify tragedies or catastrophes, the earliest known use of the term to describe the sales holiday actually originates in the US city of Philadelphia in in the early 1950s, used by local police to describe the sudden increase in road and pedestrian traffic that for them signaled the start of the holiday shopping season. In fact, it wasn’t until the 1980s that merchants began to promote Black Friday’s origin as being the first day of the year that merchants report positive sales. It’s all about good marketing, after all. Luckily for consumers today, Black Friday sales are now offered online as well as in stores. What’s more, many Black Friday sales begin before the actual day, allowing consumers to take advantage of great deals even earlier, and taking the pressure off of making all purchases on one day.
